[영어] 전치사/부사 notwithstanding의 어원과 의미

영단어를 암기하던 중 notwithstanding의 뜻이 헷갈려 이를 캠브릿지딕셔너리와 윅셔너리를 참고하여 정리해봤습니다.

1. notwithstanding의 어원

직역하면 '아니 견디는(안견디는)'이란 뜻의 notwithstanding은 '아니 견디는->견디지 않은 채로도, 맞서면서도->~의 방해에서도 견디는'이란 뜻을 거쳐 의미가 확장됩니다.

 

2. notwithstanding의 의미

notwithstanding [전치사] 1) ~에도 불구하고(언급된 사실이나 사물에도 불구하고) [부사] 1) 그럼에도 불구하고(그렇긴 하지만, 그대로)(언급된 사실이나 사물에도 불구하고)

그렇게 notwithstanding은 '~에도 불구하고, 그럼에도 불구하고'라는 뜻을 가집니다.
